So, guess WHOOO I made last night? This guy. I'm not sure about him. He's either hideous or fabulously funky. This is what happens when you just start making it up as you go along. Whimsical might be a safe descriptive word for him.
Anyway, my kids love owls and have many toy stuffed owls. Last night before they went to bed I told them I was making my own and they could see it in the morning. This took about 2 hours to make start to finish.
I did have a little bit of a plan. I hate applique and don't have any of the fusible stuff anyway, so I needed something else for the eyes. The idea popped in my head to use hexies. Perfect. After that I wondered about his body. Then I realised I had some leftover Halloween selvage squares that could be sewn together ...
So then the plan was that he would be a "scrap everything" owl of all the stuff in my sewing room. He has hexies, selvages, regular fabric scraps, buttons, and even a piece of giant ric rac (that I bought and had no idea what I would ever use it for). I did some quilting on him with leftover variegated thread. He is stuffed with ripped up quilt batting scraps.
I LOVE his eyes. See the fussy cut clock. I knew that was perfect when I found it in my I-spy hexy bag. The other one is a snowflake from some Christmas fabric. The little star buttons are left from a cool project I made this summer that I will get around to posting some day.
His wings are sewn on separate so they can flap if need be. He is holding a pumpkin on a wing. He is about 16 inches tall.
Here he is flying around the house. The kids love him but he is MINE !!! (Well technically, but they are welcome to play with him)
Anyway ... until next time. Happy Sewing. Posted by Riel Nason.
